Misty mountains, undulating tea gardens, a ring of the gong, manicured beaches, waterfalls, glimpse of the ancient world, wildlife, a hint of spice and still you have not covered it all on an island country Sri Lanka.
With varied landscapes and a constantly changing topography, one wonders if this beautiful country should be politically, geographically or historically marked on the world map. There is something for every traveller to satiate each mood, uplift spirits and stir the soul into adventures that have been tucked away in the deep corners of imagination!
The Northernmost part of the country is a hot pot of various cultures mixed together – Muslim, Portuguese, Dutch, British and Sinhalese and the trace of each culture can be seen in the city of Jaffna. It is a heady mix of colorful temples bordering with huge churches and streets lined by Dutch and British residences.
The Central part of the country has a varied mix of places you can choose from. Spotting leopards and birds at the Wilpattu National Park, or just a walk down the ancient kingdoms of Lanka in the cities of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Digamadulla will enable you to catch a glimpse of the once glorious townships, palaces, temples, monasteries, hospitals and theaters intricately carved and modeled out of stone lay.
Not too far is the Sirigiya fort set on a massive boulder dating back to the 5th century. If you like to follow the migratory paths of elephants, samba deers and leopards then just a few kilometers away from this fort are the Minneriya National Park and the Wasgumawa National Park.
Just as you leave behind the trails and treks of the Central province, you come upon the serene landscapes of the Hill country – Kandy, Nuwara Eliya Horton plains (popularly called Little England) and Badulla that marks the southeast extremity of the Hill country, is a transport gateway to the east coast. You can even see the elephants bathe and may be offer some fruits to them at the Pinnawala Elephant orphanage. A trip to the Hakgala botanical gardens will place you on the highest set botanical garden in the world. The Hill country offers a host of trails through scenic lakes, waterfalls and tea gardens.
Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, has a long history as a port on ancient east-west trade routes. As it was successively ruled by the Portuguese, Dutch and British its influence can be seen in the architecture of colonial buildings interspersed with high-rises and shopping malls.
A little south of the capital is the city of Galle, a UNESCO world heritage site dotted with Dutch colonial buildings, mosques, grand mansions and museums.
Besides this abundant wealth of historical sites, wildlife sanctuaries, monasteries trails and treks the little country boasts of a nearly 1600 kms stretch of palm fringed coastline. The exotic beaches offer scuba diving, boutique hotels, glowing coral reefs and sandbars. Experience whale watching at Mirissa or get sun soaked in the southern beaches - Tangalla, Beruwala, Mirissa, Bentota and Unawatuna.
